GRADES 2 - 4 INTRAMURAL BASKETBALL

April/May 2008

General Information

Intramural teams and coaches will meet on Fridays from 3:15pm-4:30pm beginning on 4/4/08 and ending on 5/23/08.  The final two weeks will be reserved for playoffs, with the semifinals on 4/16 and the championship game on 4/23.

Players are divided into four teams with an equal distribution of ages and abilities.  Players are to be encouraged and instructed to play as a team and to include each player during the course of the game. One parent volunteer is responsible for each team.  Coaches will ensure that each player receives a similar amount of playing time throughout the game.

The first 10 minutes will be used for group warm-ups and stretches, followed by 20 minutes of instruction and drills. The coaches will then have 10-15 minutes to work with their individual teams with each team using ½ of the small court (2 small courts in gym).  After this, teams will split for games, each game being divided into two ten minute (running clock) periods with a 5 minute half time.

Games

Two games will be played side-by-side in the gym using the short courts.  Each team will play every Friday for the first six weeks.  On 4/16, the team in 1st place will play against the team in 4th place, and the team in 2nd place will play against the team in 3rd place.  The winners of these two games will play on 4/23 for the championship on the big court in the gym.

Referees

Intramurals are intended to be instructional and fun with an emphasis on learning the fundamentals of the game of basketball.  The parent coaches will also serve as referees for the games.  Since games will be side-by-side, coaches should stand along the midline between the two short courts to prevent balls from going into the next court.

Fouls will be limited to excessive physical contact (pushing, intentional bumping, and other flagrant and obvious fouls), traveling, and double dribble.  If a foul is called, a whistle will be blown and the player will be told what he or she did to cause the foul.  At this point, the other team will gain possession of the ball, take it out of bounds, and throw it back in.  There will be no free throws for fouls, and the clock will not stop.
